Listening to this music from so long ago conjures so much. I’m struck by how much advanced music and improvising Jim is playing. Ray’s drumming to my ears is phenomenal and so unique. We were just 21 years old! When I first heard Jim and Ray play duet I just had to find
a way to be a part of that sound. I had to practice and listen to piles
of new music to get my chops up to play with them.
The music is boundless in its optimism.
So humorous yet deadly serious.
The blend of the horns is from a bygone era (I mean that in the best way). Jim’s composing is so mature. It’s as if the band had already developed a complete musical movement with its own syntax and mysticism. A strange combination of Jazz as spiritual language with
a Fort Wayne honky tonk. Add in Ray’s absurdist humor and over the
top basketball skills (he’s 5’4”!) my obnoxious angst art attitude and Callahan’s Cheshire cat qualities and you have a perplexing mix for
sure. Callahan went off into the night long ago and we never heard from him again. Miss you brother. Hope you all enjoy the listen as much as I have.
